COASTAL ORANGE COUNTY · GENERATOR ELECTRICAL & BACKUP POWER

Plan the power you need when utility power is out.

A backup-power project starts with the equipment and circuits you want to support. Define those priorities before choosing a generator connection, transfer equipment, or a broader electrical scope.

DECISIONS THAT SHAPE THE WORK

Decide what needs to keep running.

Backup requirements vary by property. A clear equipment list and installation plan are more useful than assuming every load will run at once.

01

Priority loads

Identify the equipment and circuits you want supported during an outage, including refrigeration, lighting, communications, or business equipment. Note any equipment with specific operating requirements. The selected generator and electrical arrangement must be assessed against that intended use.

02

Connection and transfer equipment

Share generator information if already selected and describe the existing electrical service. Review the connection, transfer equipment, circuit arrangement, and installation route as a complete scope. Do not assume existing equipment is compatible solely because a connection appears to fit.

03

Placement and coordination

Discuss equipment location, access, property restrictions, and any utility, permit, or inspection dependencies. Assign responsibilities for generator supply, fuel-related work, site preparation, electrical installation, and ongoing service. Confirm those responsibilities before separate trades begin.

BEFORE WE TALK

Start with your backup priorities.

  • Project city, property type, and the equipment you want supported.
  • Generator model and documentation, if already selected.
  • Existing electrical information and proposed equipment location, if known.
  • Property-management requirements and the parties supplying or servicing equipment.

DEFINE THE HANDOFF

Know the intended operation and limits.

Review the agreed electrical arrangement, the loads included, and the equipment instructions at handover. Confirm who provides operating guidance, who services the generator, and which documents to keep for future electrical or equipment work.

Generators & backup power: planning questions

Will backup power run the whole property?

That depends on the selected equipment, intended loads, and electrical design. Identify the equipment you want supported so the scope can distinguish selected circuits from a broader backup arrangement.

Can I discuss electrical work for a generator I already own?

Yes. Share the model and available documentation before making installation assumptions. The equipment, existing service, connection, and transfer arrangement need to be reviewed together.

Does the electrical work include fuel supply or generator maintenance?

Those responsibilities depend on the agreed project scope. Confirm who supplies and services the generator, who handles any fuel-related work, and which electrical installation tasks SteelWing will perform.
